What A Nice Letter From Anita Wood…

Nobody sends me nice letters like the one Jill Stephano, of the Protectors of Tule Springs, got from Councilperson Candidate Anita Wood.

It's also nice to see an actual issue being discussed. The Mayor's race abandoned that idea way before Skippy stole the race.

You'll find a philosophy a bit different philosophy from the one we heard the other day according to which city council is never, ever to say "no" to developers.

Below is the letter in full. You'll find a philosophy a bit different philosophy from the one we heard the other day according to which city council is never to say "no" to developers.

Dear Jill:

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me and educate me on the important issues regarding the Tule Springs Wash.  I learned a great deal about an area so close to my home, and yet its rich historic significance was unknown to me.  I also appreciate this opportunity to state my support for the protection of Tule Springs and the important historical and paleontological sites that are found in or near North Las Vegas.

Since I moved here with my parents at the age of seven—and especially since my husband I and purchased our home in North Las Vegas fifteen years ago—I’ve been one of the many witnesses to our explosive growth and the effect that has on our greater community.  Certainly growth, new commercial outlets, and an expanding convention and tourism market have fueled our economy, provided jobs and allowed many to achieve the American dream.  Those gains have also come at a cost.  Historic buildings are crumbling or have already been destroyed.  And now, with development pushing closer to the historic Tule Springs and to the incredibly rich pre-historical remains recently uncovered, it is time for us to protect our legacy.

I believe we can develop adequate buffers to allow economic growth while still protecting our wealth of natural history and historic places.  We have pressing needs in North Las Vegas to overcome the problems of unemployment,
foreclosure, and vacant homes—and I have an obligation to address them as well.  However, I believe we can do both.  That is what I will work for as Councilwoman from North Las Vegas Ward 3.

I applaud your organization’s efforts to take a stand and fight for what is right.  I truly believe Tule Springs is now in good and caring hands.  With your continued efforts, I am sure we can convince the BLM to protect this site.  Please keep me informed as to your progress and let me know when the BLM releases its draft decision.

Sincerely,

Anita Wood
