Some scary murder statistics in the Review-Journal today. According to a table of “murder clearance rates”, Nor’Town solves around 50-60% of its murders, while Metro police solve 70-80% and Henderson, a dull and staid community, solves most of its murders, when it can get up the energy to commit one, that is.

Now, according to a police detective for Metro:
overtime is readily approved for cases that require it
Um, that’s not so clear anymore in North Las Vegas, where Council just voted to attempt to cut back the amount of overtime. Police and firefighters typically clock a lot of overtime here because their departments have historically been understaffed, and in some cases, it is considered less expensive to fund overtime than to hire more staff. To be fair, something I generally avoid, councilwoman Anita Wood in the last meeting requested that city council look into the practice and determine if that’s really true.
Still, given that the city budget is bleeding like, well, a shooting victim at a Nor’Town bar on Saturday night, it’s unlikely that large number of new public safety staff will be available anytime soon. Gotta build a new city hall, after all.
Anyways, if the city is still looking to entice new businesses to the city, it looks like the murder-for-hire guys should give us a look. Hey, a 50-50 chance of getting caught is a lot better odds than you’ll get at Jerry’s Nugget.
