This post is just an excuse to list some of my favorite highlights from the debate over the severance of city manager Rose from Nor'Town last week. A few of these didn't make Lynnette Curtis's or Amanda Llewellyn's writeups. Here's what you missed if you weren't there:
- A citizen commenting that Mr. Rose should attend beauty school so that he could learn to braid hair–as a skillful trade for a stint in the state penitentiary.
- Another citizen commenting that it was "unconscionable" for two
council members who could not be held responsible to vote for Mr.
Rose's amended contract. The two council members were former mayor Mike
Montandon and Stephanie Smith, and the reference was to the contract negotiations in June, 2009 just one day after elections of their replacements. - The Mayor Pro Temp adjuring fellow councilmembers not to engage in a "urinating contest." I can't help wondering if there aren't folk around here who wouldn't spend good money to see one of those.
- Mr. Mayor Pro Temp wondering, with the rest of us, what the heck a "hiring chill" is. As opposed to a hiring freeze, that is.
- About 200 new Full Time Employees were hired by the city during the recession.
- Oh, okay. Probably to most fun was watching councilperson Anita Wood remind us that she wasn't on the council when Rose got his salary perks. And, okay, okay, Curtis caught that, too.
No doubt it would be entirely inappropriate to remind everybody of this:
However, [Mayor Shari] Buck said, the overall economy's dire state has been tempered
somewhat in North Las Vegas due to good planning and pent-up demand for
services. For example, since 2005, the city has put aside about 18
percent of its revenues annually. That compares favorably with the 10
percent reserved by most cities, she said.
Today, North Las Vegas is still setting aside 14 percent of its revenue. (LVBinessPress)
Er, anybody dare to call the city to find out what that percentage really is today?
